Cornish Crabbers
Cornish Crabbers are a boatbuilding company based at Rock near Wadebridge on the North Cornwall coast and are named after the famous Crabber design. The company are under new management who took on a challenging project to restructure and promote new business during a very difficult financial period within the UK. This very successful company realised very early on that they had also inherited a poor safety culture and were determined to address this to enhance their professional company and outstanding product range. The managing director contacted RCES at the Helston office and a meeting was arranged. After viewing the production processes and supporting administration we were able to suggest a safety coaching service. This was to involve a hands on approach to the business by providing a consultant to work within the company on a one day per week basis. During this time the consultant would become the site safety manager and be responsible for advising managers and staff and keeping the MD up to date on safety issues. Now 6 months on the premises has a visible and more positive safety culture that has developed by coaching others and gradually implementing procedures. RCES have completed over 200 COSHH assessments, provided a comprehensive safety policy, developed risk assessments and safe systems of work, completed and implemented the fire risk assessment, carried out a needs analysis on dust and fume extraction, assisted the MD in selecting an extraction system provider by over viewing estimates and suggested schemes, RCES have worked along side the installers to create a safer workplace and cleaner working environment for staff and customers. The ongoing aim is to establish a system of safety management that is owned and managed by Cornish Crabbers in readiness for their own safety advisor or manager to assume the role.
